New Year, New Vegan Lifestyle

Wednesday, January 1, 2020

It's that time of year again... the start of a fresh and shiny new year. We're all bright eyed and ready to check off everything on our mental to-do lists that we've been putting off since March of last year. And a vegan lifestyle might just be one of those tasks you'd like to accomplish in 2020. This post is here to share tips and tricks on how to stick with this new year's resolution and finally put a little tiny check mark next to "try out being vegan" on that mental to-do list.

How to Stick to a Vegan Lifestyle:

1. Have the right intentions
No matter what you're trying to do, if your intentions are wrong, you won't succeed. And I'm not saying there's a right or wrong intention for starting a vegan diet. It has to be right for you. Dig deep. Do it for you. Do it for the animals. Do it for the environment. Do it for your diet. But don't do it because it's trendy or someone else told you to.

2. Go slow
You don't have to start a vegan lifestyle right away. I had a vegetarian diet for 4 years before deciding I wanted to start a vegan diet. That was definitely the right pace for me. You can first cut out meat. Then check out the dairy-free section at the grocery store. Maybe start looking into veganizing your makeup bag. Go at your own pace.

3. Have a day of "lasts"
I did this when I first started my vegan diet and I always highly recommend it to anyone else wanting to start a vegan lifestyle. I decided I wanted to start a vegan diet in the summer of 2012. I gave myself until the end of the year to have all of my "lasts". I had my last bag of Doritos. I had my last egg salad sandwich. I had my last cheeseburger. Coming from someone who enjoys food, I found a lot of consolation in those last few meals.

4. Try your best
It's really not as hard as it seems, but if you have a few slip ups, don't sweat it. Going back to step #1, if you're intentions are honorable, a few mistakes doesn't mean you care any less.

5. Don't listen to anyone else
This is probably the most important step. Though you may be considering to take advice from someone else right now by reading this post, seriously don't listen to anyone else's opinion on veganism. Everyone lives a different lifestyle, and a vegan lifestyle is no different. For some reason, it has become easy and sort of taboo to judge people with a vegan diet/lifestyle. Your own opinion is the only one that you have to live with at the end of the day. Don't let anyone else sway your morals.

Listen to yourself, think about your intentions, go at your own pace, say goodbye to the food you think you might miss, try your best, and don't listen to anyone else...
Starting a whole new lifestyle from scratch seems scary, but if it's something you think you might be into, give it a try. It might be easier than you think.
